Regenerative Braking System (RBS) - Working
“Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create.”

According to Einstein's theory, the law of conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only converted from one form of energy to another. Likewise, generally in an automobile braking system, while applying the brake, the kinetic energy of the wheel is converted into thermal energy, which will happen to stop the vehicle from moving. This is the working principle of the conventional braking system, which is adapted in fuel operated engines. Here some energy loss will occur and liberated in the form of heat to surroundings due to friction in the brake linings.
While moving to a hybrid and electric vehicle, Engineers found the solution to this energy loss in braking by implementing the technology called Regenerative Braking System. This system is used along with a conventional braking unit. This system assists in converting that kinetic energy into electrical energy. The simplified motor with a fine gear setup is placed near or inside the wheels to drive the vehicle while engaged with electric mode. This motor is coupled with a battery via electrical controllers and power electronics circuits.

Now, let's assume the car moves in the forward direction driven by the motor through gear linkages with wheels. These gear linkages transfer the power to wheels. At the time of braking, this system will harvest a part of kinetic energy from the wheels.,(i.e.) while pressing the brake pedal these gear linkages near or inside the wheels alter the gear by applying the torque to wheels in the reverse direction. So the direction of the drive motor gets reversed at that instant and the car gets slow down. If the direction of the linkages gets reversed, then the motor spins opposite so it acts as a generator. Now the motor generates electricity and is fed back to the supply system and stores it in the battery. This functioning happens at every time of braking. At acceleration, actual working takes place.
This system is applicable only at low speeds and city traffic conditions, at high speeds, conventional brakes go ahead. This advancement helps to increase little efficiency and performance of the car.
